This four-year course is our very popular BA (Hons) Performance in Musical Theatre course, with an additional integrated foundation year. It’s the perfect route to help you develop the skills and self-confidence needed before you embark on Year 1 of your degree course. The foundation year, designed over 3 terms, enables students to achieve their potential as an actor at the start of their journey.
By being accepted onto this course, subject to passing all relevant modules, you will have the option to progress onto our 3-year degree course the following September.
Like many other foundation courses, all students will also have the opportunity to audition for other institutions during your foundation year, with the support of our faculty and your course leader.
This allows our students to have a guaranteed* place on a degree, whilst keeping their options open for further study elsewhere.
*Subject to passing all relevant modules
The foundation year training is highly vocational and is constructed to help each student achieve their potential in all three disciplines – Acting, Singing and Dance. We will help you discover where your strengths and weaknesses lie, what courses and colleges might best suit you, and your goals as a performer beyond training.
Most of your classes will be technique based to ensure you are laying the correct foundations across all disciplines.
As a year group you will be working closely together to undertake tasks and develop as a performer creatively and intellectually.
SINGING AND ACTING
The Singing/Acting module equips students with the technical foundations in singing and acting necessary to prepare you for entry into musical theatre training at a degree level. The module involves a series of practical classes focussing on the acquisition, development, and application of musical theatre skills, including classes in acting, improvisation, acting through song, ensemble singing, and voice. During group classes, you will explore a range of techniques, developing competence in each of these while also gaining knowledge and understanding of the principles related to each individual area of study.
DANCE
This module involves a series of practical classes focussing on the acquisition, development, and application of skills relating to musical theatre. Everyone will receive classes in Fitness and Wellbeing in order to strengthen and improve stamina to support the work done in the other dance classes and also to aid injury prevention.
We will practice three core dance disciplines Ballet, Jazz and Tap. These individual classes provide a technical and artistic overview appropriate for someone aspiring to enter into further training.

ROUTES TO PERFORMANCE
This module allows you to develop your technical skills by putting them into practice within a performance context. This will be a performance in our resident theatre – The Eve Lyons Studio Theatre for your friends and family. A range of texts will be chosen to challenge you and will require all the skills and techniques you have learnt in your classes. The musicals will be chosen with the specific year group in mind to showcase everyone to their best advantage.
CONTEXTUAL STUDIES
You will work closely with your course leader and other members of staff to ensure you are fully prepared and are choosing the correct material to excel in your auditions. This module will provide you with an overview of key practitioners, performance styles and key texts. Research is key for the practical classes, rehearsals and performance and therefore you will be given several research-based tasks to inform and enhance your practical work. You will also develop your ability to reflect on, analyse and critique the work you do in class and rehearsal.
