This four-year course is our very popular BA (Hons) Acting for Stage and Screen course, with an additional integrated foundation year. It’s the perfect route to help you develop the skills and self-confidence needed before you embark on Year 1 of your degree course. The foundation year, designed over 3 terms, enables students to achieve their potential as an actor at the start of their journey.

By being accepted onto this course, subject to passing all relevant modules, you will have the option to progress onto our 3-year degree course the following September.

Like many other foundation courses, all students will also have the opportunity to audition for other institutions during your foundation year, with the support of our faculty and your course leader.

This allows our students to have a guaranteed* place on a degree, whilst keeping their options open for further study elsewhere.

*Subject to passing all relevant modules

The foundation year training is highly vocational and is constructed to help each student achieve their potential in all areas. We will help you discover where your strengths and weaknesses lie, what courses and colleges might best suit you, and your goals as a performer beyond training.

Most of your classes will be technique based to ensure you are laying the correct foundations across all disciplines.

As a year group you will be working closely together to undertake tasks and develop as a performer creatively and intellectually.

ACTING

The Acting module covers wide range of techniques that focus on building core skills. Students will be exposed to range of dramatic texts during monologue and scene work and will be given opportunities to explore their creativity and adaptability in improvisation and devising lessons.

voice and movement

The voice component of the Voice/Movement module will help students to develop an unrestricted, well-placed, and articulated voice, powered by the breath and free of habitual tension. Students will work with tutors to harness the potential of their own voice and explore the ways in which it can be used in response to range of dramatic texts.

The movement component will enable students to take responsibility for their own body through an informed and balanced approach to the physical demands of professional training. The risk of injury will thereby be reduced, providing secure foundation for professional career. Further to this, students will learn how to move freely and easily in manner appropriate to the demands of the performance material and will learn how to assimilate basic choreographed steps.

Routes to performance

Students will develop their technique and contextualise what they have learned within rehearsal and performance settings during the Routes to Performance module. This module will require students to work collaboratively as well as on individual performance material.

Collaboration is key part of professional artistic life, and opportunities such as these represent valuable learning experiences which will prepare students for degree level training and beyond.

contextual studies

In the Contextual Studies module, students will contextualise what they have learned during a series of seminars and lectures. Students will work both individually and in groups to identify key practitioners and explore a range of dramatic texts; analyse current trends and review potential career avenues. The assigned tasks will develop the students’ understanding of how they can use what they have learned in the theoretical classes to inform their practice.

Learning will be consolidated during personal practice time, during which students are able to access the learning resources provided both by PPA and DMU. This personal study time gives students the opportunity to build knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts which underpin each genre, ultimately supporting the students in their acquisition of practical skills in the regular classes and workshops.
